Turkey Unveils YILDIRIMHAN Hypersonic-Capable Missile at SAHA 2026
Turkey has presented a new long-range ballistic missile, YILDIRIMHAN, as part of its expanding domestic defense portfolio. The system is described as the country’s longest-range missile to date with hypersonic capability.
Turkey has introduced a new long-range ballistic missile, YILDIRIMHAN, as part of its broader effort to expand domestic defense production and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
The system was presented during the SAHA 2026 exhibition in Istanbul, where multiple indigenous platforms were showcased. According to Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, the liquid-fueled missile represents the longest-range capability currently developed by Turkey and is designed to reach hypersonic speeds.
Officials indicated that the missile is part of a wider portfolio of systems developed through domestic research and development programs. Other technologies displayed at the event included the Gölgehan electronic warfare software, the Güçhan turbofan engine, and the PNR-35 sniper rifle, reflecting efforts to localize production across multiple defense domains.
The ministry stated that recent investments have expanded Turkey’s production capacity and strengthened its research-driven industrial base. Güler indicated that sustaining technological relevance requires continuous development cycles aligned with evolving operational requirements.
Under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey has prioritized defense-industrial autonomy, with a focus on scaling indigenous manufacturing and advancing high-end capabilities. The country has already established a strong position in unmanned systems and continues to expand into missile technologies, propulsion, and air defense.
Earlier developments include the delivery of the domestically developed Steel Dome air defense system to the Turkish military, signaling progress in layered air and missile defense capabilities. Officials have framed such programs as critical steps toward reducing external dependencies.
Turkey’s defense sector has undergone rapid expansion in recent years, supported by state-backed investment and export-driven growth. The introduction of YILDIRIMHAN highlights Ankara’s intent to further develop long-range strike capabilities while reinforcing its domestic industrial base.
