Austria Seeks 12 Million 7.62mm Machine-Gun Rounds as Tender Deadline Nears
Austria's Ministry of Defense is seeking 12 million linked machine-gun cartridges, adding to a series of ammunition procurement programs for the country's armed forces.
Austria's Ministry of Defense is seeking suppliers for 12 million rounds of 7.62mm machine-gun ammunition, with the deadline for participation in the procurement procedure set for November 5, 2026.
The tender covers 12 million linked cartridges in a configuration of four standard ball rounds to one tracer round, using M13 ammunition links. The procurement is being conducted through a negotiated procedure with prior publication under Austrian defense procurement legislation.
According to the official tender notice, the requirement is identified under reference E90023/25/0-VER/2026 and classified as a defense equipment supply contract. The notice does not disclose an estimated contract value or identify a preferred supplier.
Austria Expands Small-Caliber Ammunition Procurement
The latest requirement adds to a series of ammunition tenders launched by the Austrian Armed Forces as the country seeks to strengthen its military inventories and sustain operational readiness.
As AdriaDefense reported in August, Austria previously launched a procurement procedure for 40 million rounds of 5.56mm ammunition for its StG 77 service rifles, with deliveries planned between 2028 and 2031.
The country has also pursued separate purchases of .338 Lapua Magnum sniper ammunition, covering both standard and armor-piercing configurations.
Unlike the 5.56mm rifle ammunition requirement, the newly identified 7.62mm procurement specifies a linked belt configuration containing both ball and tracer cartridges.
The four-to-one ammunition arrangement is commonly associated with machine-gun belts, combining conventional projectiles with tracer rounds that help operators observe the direction of fire.
The publicly available notice does not specify the intended machine-gun platforms, planned delivery schedule or how the ammunition will be allocated between training, operational use and reserve stocks.
Opportunities for European Ammunition Manufacturers
The procurement represents another potential supply opportunity for ammunition manufacturers operating in Central and Eastern Europe, where several companies produce NATO-standard small-caliber cartridges.
Poland, the Czech Republic and other regional markets maintain established ammunition manufacturing industries that could be relevant to procurement requirements of this type, although no participating companies have been publicly identified.
The Austrian Ministry of Defense is conducting the procedure under its wider military procurement framework, with the deadline for participation approaching on November 5.
No contract award has been announced, and the identity of the eventual supplier remains unknown.
